Signal Hill Mall: History and my First Visit

Signal Hill Mall, located in Statesville, NC, is my favorite mall of all time. It has faced extreme decline, operating with a single digit number of stores with concourses filled with dangerous amounts of mold during its final years.

Uptown Christianburg in Christianburg, VA, formerly the New River Valley Mall, exists today in some sort of state inbetween alive and dead. During my visit in 2024, the mall still had some stores, but I felt like this place was doomed in the long run. The mall does have success with its anchor stores, however, so this location is viable for retail operations. The mall features a remodeled 2000s interior that strangely enough has a fireplace in the center court. How long will this place last? Time will tell, and hopefully I can revisit someday and record a video to tell its story.

Pecanland Mall in Monroe, Louisiana, is a mall that during my visit in January 2025 was doing pretty well. The mall features a ton of gorgeous architecture with the big fountains and live plants, and various reflective surfaces used throughout. Its probable that over the next decade this mall might start to struggle, but for now its hanging in the balance as more malls across the country find themselves running out of customers.

Uptown McComb, once known as Edgewood Mall, opened in 1987 and serves the city of McComb, Mississippi. Today, the mall has largely been repurposed with big box offerings, and a lot of the inline tenant space has been blown out. But theres still some life in the mall, and time will tell how this mall will hold up in the long run. I have a feeling this mall being a late 1980's mall hasnt been renovated. The tile and center stage are a nice aesthetic.

Carlsbad Mall, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a mall that defies all odds and remains open in 2025. It is a very small mall that I have dreamed of visiting for so long, and I finally got the chance to. How long will this old Ainbinder Mall survive into the future? Time will tell. A video tour with history will be on my channel in the future. #deadmall

Camp Landing Entertainment District, formerly known as the Kyova Mall, and before that as the Cedar Knoll Galleria, opened in 1988 in Ashland, Kentucky. Anchored by Sears, Phar Mor, Stone & Thomas and Kmart, this mall was developed by Zamias corp. Unfortunately, like many of his malls, this one would later die out and flounder as a traditional mall. However, new ownership has transformed this former dead mall into an entertainment spot that today I assume is pretty successful. The mall features a go kart track, a cinema, axe throwing and more. I was lucky to find this mall entirely empty during my weekday visit, which I of course prefer. Management was cool with letting me video and document the place too, thumbs up for that. Go check this place out if you're in the area, you wont be disappointed.

The Mall at Johnson City, a mall situated in the hills of Tennessee, does surprisingly well, and gets very busy. It was not easy to get these mostly empty shots, but thats what I'm here to capture. Its pink and blue floors, the pink ceilings, the pink columns and the gorgeous food court. Hopefully this mall will stand the test of time. Can't believe it took me 3 years to finally venture here.
