The Infamous 154 Store JCPenney Closing Wave

If you research dead malls that are still open, chances are they lost a JCPenney in this massive closing wave that occurred in 2020. I have researched so many malls that had this happen, which led to me coining this term. I find it kind of amusing now, due to the frequency in which I run into this number '154,' and thus have dubbed it 'The Infamous 154 Store JCPenney Closing Wave.' If you watch one of my videos, perhaps you will hear me say the term.
JCPenney announced these closures on June 4th, 2020, as the company declared bankruptcy in May of that year, and due to the pandemic that began months earlier, many of their stores were already closed. Quite frankly, a lot of the locations they closed were older stores in dying malls that probably weren't pulling in the numbers they needed to be pulling. However, they ended up pulling 17 stores off the initial 154 store closing list, which will be at the bottom of the announced store closing list.

As mentioned previously, JCPenney went back and revised the closing list, and 17 stores were removed from the closing wave. Those locations were:

Of these 17 stores that were removed from the 'infamous 154 store closing wave,' four of them have since closed as of July 2026. Those locations are:

More JCPenney closures were announced later on in 2020, as the company planned earlier in the year to end up closing around 242 stores, but these original 154 were the first big push to make that happen.
